December 21st 2006 04:33
Debi Enker and Brad Newsome from The Age look at the defining TV images in 2006, the year television in Australia turned 50.
The top 10 are:
1. Eddie Everywhere goes north - Eddie McGuire quits his on-air roles to take up a power position behind the scenes.
2. Naomi Robson - The shirt, the lizard and Wa-Wa.
3. Rex Hunt's illicit adventures - Rex admits to paying three women for sexual relationships.
4. World of sport - Socceroos at the world cup. Seven and Ten outbidding Nine for the AFL TV rights and Foxtel's role in AFL TV coverage next year.
5. A different kind of Big Brother eviction - The most controversial TV incident that didn't actually screen on TV. It did introduce us to the term "turkey slap".
6. Real survival stories - Todd Russell and Brant Webb surviving the Beaconsfield mine disaster.
7. New kids rock the block - FOX FM's drive-time comedy duo of Hamish Blake and Andy Lee knock 3AW's Derryn Hinch out of the No. 1 spot. Their television program Real Stories has good ratings.
8. Vale Crocodile Hunter - The nation is shocked when Steve Irwin passes away when a stingray barb pierces his chest. Ray Martin's subsequent interview with Terri Irwin became the sixth most-watched program of 2006, attracting 2.52 million.
9. Ads on SBS, bias at the ABC - Since 1991 SBS has only allowed 5 minutes of commercials an hour and they were limited to between programs. In June that policy changed brining the network an extra $10 million a year in ad revenue.
Meanwhile at the ABC, new managing director Mark Scott announces that all radio and television programs to the same scrutiny as news and current affairs. The rules aim to eliminate perceptions of political bias.
10. Milestones behind the mike - Australian radio personalities celebrate milestones. Neil Mitchell celebrated 20 years at 3AW and 774 ABC Melbourne's Jon Faine marked 10 years behind the microphone.
Do you think some events should be added or removed from the list? If so how would you improve it?
