Will Mel Gibson's Apocalypto Sink or Swim?
December 12th 2006 09:06
CNN asks the question, will Apocalypto be Mel Gibson's doom or revival?
On the one hand, Gibson's last movie "The Passion of the Christ" was a phenomenal success, on the other hand he is coming off a drunken anti-Semitic rant and arrest.
When Gibson's new movie Apocalypto is released on Friday will they turn up at the box office?

If I had a billion dollars in my bank account, I wouldn't be that concerned if they didn't, or even if they considered me anti-Semitic. I'd just go on making films, plying my trade.
You can even ply your trade with no money in your bank account if you're determined enough and have the passion ... even on Orble ...

Film & TV on DVD
The only thing I care about less than peoples private lives is box office takings. With only a few exceptions, box office indicates a lack in quality, not a sign of excellence.
Considering the trailer for Apocalypto looks like a cross between Terrence Malick and Francis Ford Coppolla I know that it should be a worthy cinematic experience.
The fact that I have been obsessed with the Mayan and Incan civilizations since I was a wee lad means I am the target market.
(Worth noting that I did not dig Braveheart at all, but as an athiest I found Passion to be an exceptional story of sacrifice for belief ala Spartacus)

Love Polanski, couldn't care less that he slept with an underage girl pretending to be older.
Apocalypto looks sensational.
I'm way down with the Mayan, Incas, Aztecs ...
Didn't mind Braveheart though (but haven't seen it since it came out), but thought Passion of the Christ was stunningly well made.
Wondering if I can get away with putting Apocalypto and Passion up on horrorphile .... on that post-modern horror tip (post-modern, hahaha)

I also loved Passion of the Christ and have been looking forward to Apocalypto since well before Mel was arrested.
There's something infatuating about the ancient Incan and Mayan civilisations isn't there?
